GRAND MAGIX

witchdustblue

GRAND MAGIX is one of the two well documented truly massive shows of NWSI. It is a tour de force of aerial helium suspended performance, aerial puppetry, stilt ensemble drumming, specialist fireworks, giant inflatable puppetry special effects leading to the great musical and emotional cadence of the giant aerial light show moon moth. In essence it is an artistic celebration of nature versus technology 2001 Fiona Ellis in Northern Review event of the month rated Grand Magix, the NWSI finale of the Stockton international Riverside Festival, top equal with Robert Lapage’s Dark Side of the Moon.

SCENARIO: SPLIT SITE VERSION

At Site 1 Male techno magician, Merlin, appears with an army of drumming Robots and a sequence of pyrotechnic spells waterfalls rocketry, and noise accompanies him to his magical confrontation with Morgana la fey

At Site 2 the female nature magician, Morgana, conjures the Caterpillar, a monster of nature, which drives back the robots and circles through the audience in the square to a jazz theme.

The techno Magician responds, with a many wheeled firework machine driving the Caterpillar away.

A flying Morgana suspended from a helium balloon swoops on Merlin, circles the square and casts aerial pyrotechnic spells. She descends to the ground, puts on her magic extending dress and rises releasing a host of color changing moths.

The techno magician responds with the Giant (forty foot) robot.

The Magicians reappear as forty foot giants. At first there is a stand off and then, reconciled, they dance with each other and cast a collaborative double spell that conjures up the giant white moon moth. To the sound of Barba’s adagio it floats over the heads of the audience before being transformed into a kinetic aerial light show.

Delireality

sleepblue and yellow

Delireality is a large-scale 40 minute street performance scenographic exploration
of the imagery of Salvador Dali using pyrotechnics, prosthetics,
inflatable sculptures, giant stilts, music and theatre. The scenario
is site and scale adaptable. NWSI have performed Delireality at the
full scale in Singapore, Poznan, Gdansk, Terrasson, Kortrijk, Greenwich,
and Stockton upon tees. smaller versions have been performed in many
other locations.

SCENARIO: 60 Mins approx

A parade of samba playing ants leads to a four-metre high burning replica
of the “premonitions of civil war” in paper mache. The ants pass through a curtain
of fire, and into the graveyard of Salvador Dali.

A surrealist sculpture park graveyard is created in a town square. It is the
graveyard of Salvador Dali. This features “pyrotechnic trees”, burnable
sculptures, and many other concrete irrational pyrotechnical furnishings from
the Dalinian iconography. The centrepiece of the graveyard is a 40-square metre
mirrored-box mausoleum.

The funeral cortege of ten giant samba-playing ants and other characters
approaches the graveyard accompanied by the piercing sound of firecrackers and
enters it through the ‘premonitions of civil war’ gate, a full three dimensional
realisation of Dali’s most famous painting. The nine-foot tall ants pay their
respects at Dali’s grave with a surreally-funky display of drumming before
disappearing into the night.

“Criminally-elegant ladies” with bodies metamorphosing into chests of drawers
exercise their dogs in the graveyard. A pyrotechnic storm erupts from a
criminally-elegant lady’s “crutchbrella”. The storm activates the emergance
of many “Dalis”.

A “criminally-elegant elongated nude” poses whilst Dali sketches her in fire.
He simultaneously dashes off a four-metre pyrotechnic self-portrait.

The super “flare cauldrons” are activated and Dali showers in fire. This is
followed by the dreamy passage through the graveyard of the “Sleep” characters
on stilts and crutches. These are animated elongated heads modelled on the
celebrated Dalinean image of sleep. They are followed by 16-metre tall
illuminated inflatable interpretations of the Dalinean “Angelus” images, and
a pair of enormous inflatable hands, as featured in the painting of Narcissus,
which float through the graveyard to the sound of Bach metamorphosing into
the foot-stamping rhythm of a pure flamenco.

A change of tempo introduces the “Temptations of St. Anthony Parade” featuring
a pair of four-metre elephants, the criminally-elegant blue nude, a green
St. Anthony carrying a pyrotechnic cross, and a host of whirling dervish
one-legged “Dalis” carrying catherine wheels.

An extract from Mahler heralds the entry of an 18-foot steel pyrotechnic
realisation of the celebrated Dalinean image of the burning giraffe. This
pattern consists of 100 small colour-changing Catherine wheels topped with
a spine of fire. This is the emotional climax and celebration follows. With
an eruption of very special giant wheels and other pyrotechnic furnishings
providing the back drop for the whirling dance of one legged “Dalis”
carrying fire-wheels, amongst the tall-as-buildings “Angelus” inflatables,
the “Sleeps”, and the six-metre inflatable hands. This dance is set against
a backdrop of very special effects multiple Catherine wheel installations
(both horizontal and vertical), Roman candle installations

At this point the 10 metre tango couple Dali and Gala dance the tango
and interact with the audience the performance is topped with an aerial
pyrotechnic display.

Total show length: approx 40 minutes.

The Drumming Ants

content_img_2

The shared consciousness of ants is perfectly suited to a percussion ensemble which has delighted adults and children world wide. Here you can see them in Poznan featured in the opening of Delireality our large-scale pyrotechnic collaboration with Salvador Dali. You can also see them in The Ant Orkezdra. They are perfect for a musical parade situation where you want a very special performance that is large enough for everyone to see and enjoy

Sid the Spider

taranta

Sid has performed in Beijing and in parades and interventions across Europe from Salamanca to Genk. Possibly the largest and most animated free standing spider puppet in the world he creates much hilarity when he gathers families and dives on them. He is as happy in a long parade as in a small zone intervention and can dive under aerial obstructions. Above you can see him in Tarrega in Spain

Chromarama

red duplex

Chromarama is an animation of abstract color released from its depictive duty.

The movement of wrapped human forms reconstructs the human condition in

a zone of dream and floating meaning. The soundtrack, juxtaposing original

sounds with extracts from classical masterpieces, has a powerful emotional

cadence that takes the audience on a journey both strange and strangely familiar.
Chromarama has been performed in famous arts locations worldwide; for example

The Kennedy Arts Centre in Washington The Sau Paolo Arts centre in Sao Paulo

Brazil and the National Gallery London. Chromarama has launched the Poznan festival and

generally has been enjoyed with equal concentration by adults and children in

festivals in town squares all over the world.

It is  a medium size arena performance and requires 14 performers. On occasions

elements have been extracted to make smaller performances. See Quads in the walkabout category

The Butterfly Collection

blue triangle in largs

What could be more festive, miraculous or memorable than the arrival of a giant flock of butterflies?

The Butterflies are close copies of nature and the show encourages city dwellers

to make relationships and learn the names of some of the species of these endangered

denizens of the air. Our collection features The Adonis Blue, The Chalk Blue,

The Swallowtail, the Red admiral,The Marble Veined white, the Purple Emperor,

The Oak blue, and the Green Triangle. The Butterflies spread the philosophy that

no-one has to do things… it is perfectly adequate to simply float about being beautiful

perhaps sipping some nectar. They are fully mobile and, with their prehensile probosci and signal emitting

antennae, gently interact with flora and fauna, civic flower displays, children and adults.

They have traveled the world with performances in China, Rumania, Doha and all over Europe

The Caterpillar

content_img_1
This very hungry Caterpillar eats people.
But they seem to like being eaten!

Possibly the largest walkabout puppet in the world

- the size of two buses yet very light on its feet-

this creature has performed in Taiwan and China

and in many places in Europe. Some of the video

was unfortunately made on an iPhone held the wrong

way…ooops! But it is nice to see the Caterpillar out

for a walk with its many friends in Chelmsford. So we

kept that footage.

The caterpillar enjoys the lack of barriers in an intervention
but can also be very interactive in a city parade with barriers
here is is a video link of the Caterpillar in the london

“Thank you so much for your help in making the 2006 London St. Patrick’s Day Parade
such a great event – it was a wonderful success and I appreciate the time and effort
you put into making it so! The caterpillar was a key centre point
in the parade, wowing all the spectators and getting many comments!
Look forward to working together again”.
